The Principle

The wallet never connects directly to anything else. All communication passes through your eye and your phone, which act as visual intermediaries.

How does it work in practice?

An air-gapped transaction exchange follows a simple sequence:

  1. You prepare your transaction on the mobile app (amount, recipient).
  2. The app displays a QR code containing the unsigned transaction.
  3. You scan this QR code with the wallet's camera.
  4. You physically validate on the wallet's screen.
  5. The wallet displays another QR code containing the signature.
  6. You rescan it on the phone to broadcast the transaction to the blockchain.

At no point is the device in direct contact with anything other than a light beam. It is mechanically impossible for a remote attacker to execute code on it.

Who is it really for?

Air-gapped is not essential for everyone. It is relevant if:

  • You hold a significant amount of crypto (from several tens of thousands of euros).
  • You want the highest level of security without compromise.
  • You are willing to accept a little more daily friction (scanning QR codes takes more time than a USB connection).
