Multisignature requires multiple keys to validate a transaction: in a 2-of-3 setup, a stolen or lost key is enough to neither spend your funds nor block them. For offline Bitcoin multisig, the Keystone 3 Pro is the ideal entry point. For multisig on Ethereum and Solana as well, the OneKey Pro takes over. Both devices are available at Neowalt.

A standard hardware wallet relies on a single private key. If this key or its recovery phrase falls into the wrong hands, your funds go with it. If you lose it, they are locked forever. Multisignature (or multisig) eliminates this single point of failure. In this guide, Neowalt, the official French distributor of hardware wallets, explains how it works, who it is for, and which wallets from our store support it: the Keystone 3 Pro and the OneKey Pro.

What is multisignature?

A multisig wallet requires multiple signatures, coming from different keys, to validate a transaction. It is described as "m-of-n": n keys exist, and m of them must sign. This mechanism has been standardized on Bitcoin for a long time (see BIP-11). For a complete introduction, also check out our article Multi-signature: securing crypto assets as a group.

The most common setup is the 2-of-3 multisig:

  • three keys are created, ideally on three separate devices;
  • two are sufficient to send funds;
  • a single key cannot do anything on its own.

It is the same principle as a bank safe with two locks: it takes two people, or two keys, to open it.

Why switch to multisig?

Multisig protects you against both theft and loss. Concretely:

  • Theft or burglary: a thief who grabs a device or a recovery phrase has only one key out of three. They cannot move anything.
  • Loss or hardware failure: do you lose a device? The two remaining keys are enough to recover your funds.
  • Human error: a transaction must be validated on two devices. A mistake or clicking on a malicious link is much less likely to succeed.
  • Succession/Transmission: a key can be entrusted to a relative or a notary, without giving them sole access to your funds.
  • Companies and associations: no partner can spend the treasury alone.
💡

Who is multisig for?

Especially for those who hold a significant amount or who manage funds as a group. For small amounts, a single well-backed-up wallet remains sufficient. To learn more about risk distribution, read our guide on diversifying storage across several hardware wallets.

Keystone 3 Pro: 100% offline Bitcoin multisig

The Keystone 3 Pro is the ideal choice for Bitcoin multisig without any wireless connection. It has no Bluetooth, no Wi-Fi, and no NFC: everything happens via QR code (air-gapped operation). To learn about the company behind the device, see our presentation of Keystone or the official website keyst.one.

  • Compatible with leading multisig coordinators: Sparrow, Nunchuk, and BlueWallet.
  • Three secure chips and an anti-tamper mechanism that wipes sensitive data if opened.
  • 4-inch touchscreen to clearly verify every address and amount.
  • Fingerprint sensor to unlock and sign without retyping your PIN.
  • Shamir backup and up to 3 recovery phrases on a single device.

Price: €149.90. For whom: Bitcoin holders who want an air-gapped multisig at the best value for money.

OneKey Pro: multisig on Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana

The OneKey Pro goes further than Bitcoin: it works with the main multisig solutions on several blockchains.

  • Bitcoin with Sparrow Wallet, Ethereum and EVM networks with Safe, Solana with Squads.
  • Four EAL6+ certified chips and data erasure if intrusion is detected.
  • Three connection modes: air-gap signing via QR code, Bluetooth, or USB-C.
  • SignGuard decodes every transaction before signing and alerts you to phishing or malicious contracts.
  • 3.5-inch touchscreen, fingerprint sensor, Qi2 wireless charging, and only 7.6 mm thick.

Price: €279, in black or white. For whom: active DeFi users, teams, and companies that want multisig on multiple blockchains. Find all the details in our article dedicated to the OneKey Pro and on the official website onekey.so.

Keystone 3 Pro or OneKey Pro: which one to choose?

Do you only hold Bitcoin? The Keystone 3 Pro is enough. Do you also want multisig on Ethereum or Solana? The OneKey Pro is the only one of the two to officially announce it.

Setting up a 2-of-3 Bitcoin multisig

Expect about an hour for an initial setup with Sparrow Wallet, which is free and open source. The main steps:

  1. Gather three keys. Ideally, three devices from different brands, for example, a Keystone 3 Pro, a OneKey Pro, and a third compatible hardware wallet.
  2. Initialize each device and note down each recovery phrase on a separate medium, following our tips to avoid seed phrase errors and preferring a metal backup.
  3. Create the multisig wallet in Sparrow by choosing the 2-of-3 scheme, then import the public key (xpub) from each device.
  4. Save the wallet configuration file. It describes how the keys are combined. Without it, recovery becomes very difficult.
  5. Run a test: send a small amount, then send it back by signing with two devices.
  6. Store the keys in different locations: home, safe, trusted relative.
⚠️

Three rules never to forget

Never store two recovery phrases in the same place. Keep a copy of the configuration file with each key. Perform a recovery test once a year.

FAQ: multisignature and hardware wallet

Does multisig cost more in fees?

Slightly: a multisig transaction contains multiple signatures, so it is a bit heavier on the blockchain.

Can I use the same model three times?

Yes, but mixing brands limits the risk that a defect could affect all your keys at the same time.

Are Tangem cards multisig?

No. Tangem cards are backup copies of the same key. Only one is enough to sign. See also our comparison Tangem vs Keystone 3 Pro.

Which hardware wallet should I choose for a Bitcoin multisig?

The Keystone 3 Pro is an ideal entry point for an offline Bitcoin multisig. The OneKey Pro is suitable if you also want multisig on Ethereum or Solana. Our comparison of the best hardware wallets of 2026 rounds out this choice.

At what amount is multisig useful?

There is no official threshold. It is intended primarily for those who hold a significant amount or who manage funds as a group; for small amounts, a single well-backed-up wallet remains sufficient.

In summary
